Course description |
This course will study adult literacies practices within the community and further education sectors in Scotland and the wider world. It will examine a ‘social practice’ model of literacies through a historically informed and comparative examination of alternative theoretical perspectives on literacy and numeracy. This will include an exploration of what a 'social practices model' means and an assessment of its strengths, limitations and implications for teaching adult literacy and numeracy. In addition, different practical and theoretical approaches to participation, retention and progression will be examined, in particular the role of student identities.
