Course description This course examines the concepts of the everyday as it figures in a range of theoretical texts and as it has been
developed in recent work in cultural studies. Students will be introduced to some of the philosophical traditions within
which the concept has been articulated, and will gain some understanding of the anthropological and sociological
traditions in which it has been deployed as an analytic tool. Similarly, the concept of culture will be subjected to critical analysis and we will seek to understand something of the wide range of contexts across which it acquires its meanings. These theoretical reflections will culminate in an essay in which students will seek to undertake a critical and theoretically informed analysis of an area of everyday culture with which they are familiar; each student will be given individual guidance with their project.
