||The course runs for three hours per week in Semester 2. This course is intended to serve as an introduction to some of the major questions relating to the political and social systems of contemporary France. The course will focus initially upon the organisation and working of Government and the role of political parties under the Fifth Republic, concluding with an investigation of the centralisation/decentralisation problem. A central theme here will be the democratic status of the Fifth Republic. The focus will then shift to the operation of public policy, social institutions and the position of specific social groups in the context of economic and social change. A major consideration here will be the extent to which public policy and social institutions contribute to a reduction of inequalities within contemporary French society and the evolving role of the state.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
|-Students should develop skills of social and political analysis.
-Students will learn about the issues relating to contemporary French society and politics. They should also acquire a conceptual framework permitting them to discuss such issues in informed and scholarly sophisticated fashion.
-Students will develop writing and presentation skills: they will present their observations in written and oral form, in the French language, with reference to a broad range of secondary sources.
