Course description The course outlines the general background to the emergence of Russian as a Slavonic and Indo-European language. It is intended to acquaint students with the essentials of its historical phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis in the context of the present-day language.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will
1. have gained a knowledge and understanding of the evolution of the phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary of the Russian language
2. be able to relate these processes to the Russian language in its present state
3. have an undestanding of the relationship between Russian and Church Slavonic
4. be able to use Old Russian dictionaries and write analitical essays on the subject matter of the course.
Assessment Information
exam 60%; essay (2, 500 words) 40%.
