Course description The course will provide an introduction to the literary history of Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. It will focus on the range and development of Scandinavian literature through the study of selected texts.
While delivery will be in English, students of Scandinavian Studies will read all texts written in their primary Scandinavian language in the original (e.g. students of Swedish will read all works by Swedish authors in Swedish). The remaining texts may be read in the original, in translation into the student's primary Scandinavian language, or in translation into English. Other students without a Scandinavian language competence may read all texts in translation into English.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course will develop an ability to read individual texts in the light of historical, theoretical and linguistic contexts, and they will develop their ability to produce coherent analytical text in essays and in exam conditions.
Assessment Information
3 essays, each worth 20%, and a three-hour degree examination, worth 40%.
