Course description This course will introduce students to current debates in the geosciences, presented through the medium of topical papers from high-impact, peer reviewed journals and by visiting speakers.

Students will draw on, and reinforce, skills acquired during the Project Design and Literature Analysis course (U04460) to research wider areas of geoscience debate related to their individual research projects. This will allow students to place their own research into the much broader context of major research areas in the geosciences.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The main learning outcome of this course is to understand the nature of the scientific debate as it applies within the observational sciences. By taking this course, students will develop a critical understanding of the principal theories and concepts of some key areas within geology and they will be able to summarise these arguments and present them in an appropriate fashion. They will be given the opportunity to work with specialists in their particular field of research and will present a critical review of said field for the assessment and suggest how this field might advance in the future. Students will be able to critically identify professional level problems and issues and offer professional level interpretations
Assessment Information
Assessment will be 100% continuous assessment, and will be by summaries of current debates in geoscience:

40% Student presentation (week 5)
60% Student presentation (week 11)

Students will be introduced to current debates in geosciences. Students will also be expected to attend appropriate seminars in Semester 2 (e.g. from EPS, global change, CECS, HGRG, EEO, Hutton Club, CSEC).
