Course description British History 1 provides a wide-ranging introduction to the political history of Britain from 1603-2000. Particular emphasis is placed on the changing political system, the development of the British state, the relations between England, Scotland and Ireland, and the maintenance of an overseas Empire. The course provides a basic grounding in modern British history for those intending to take Honours History courses. But it is also designed as a self-contained survey course for those who wish to study British history as an outside subject or as part of a MA general degree.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course is designed to provide (a) an understanding of the major events and themes in the political development of modern Britain (b) an opportunity to develop the oral skills necessary for participation in seminars at Honours level (c) an opportunity to develop the essay writing skills required at Honours level.
