Course description The course provides an interdisciplinary, historically wide-ranging, and thematically diverse introduction to the field of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. There is a core section on methods and problems in modern historiography of the region, and further sections (depending on staff availability) on Islamic Law, Shi'ism, Islamic medicine, medieval history, anthropology, Arabic literature, and modern politics.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
An introduction to the advanced study of the history and culture of the Middle East and the Islamic world.
A firm methodological, and to some extent substantive basis for more specialised postgraduate study.
An understanding of the patterns of cultural value and practice of the societies under examination, and a critical awareness of both local ideologies and theoretical approaches.
Skills development in written and oral communication, analysis, and critical evaluation.
Assessment Information
One 4000 word essay, inclusive of footnotes and bibliography but not appendices.
One 2-hour examination
