| Course description |
This course examines how health policy is increasingly being shaped beyond the level of the nation state. It offers a detailed examination of the institutions of global health politics, focusing on the emerging importance of international and supranational institutions and other global actors in the development of health policy. The course examines contemporary challenges confronting the World Health Organization, the influence of organisations created to promote trade and the increased involvement of non-state actors in health policy, and the course addresses the expanded roles of the commerscial sector and civil society. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students will be able to:-
1) Understand global institutional changes relevant to the capacity of the modern state to shape health policy.
2) Examine the public health implications of these changes.
3) Understand and assess the models of development adopted by global institutions.
4) Critically examine the policy implications of the increased role of non-state actors in health governance.
5) Appraise reforms undertaken by key institutions in attempting to respond to the challenges of globalization. |
