Course description Optional course for Honours Degrees involving Mathematics and/or Statistics. Syllabus summary: Vector and scalar fields. Conservation and balance laws in integral and point form. Heat flow; gravitational field and potential; electrostatics; fluid flow. Derivation of standard equations (heat, Laplace and wave). Important 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional solutions with symmetry. Dipole potentials. Waves in acoustics. Some simple flows of real fluids.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Foundations of Calculus (MATH08005) AND Several Variable Calculus (MATH08006) AND Linear Algebra (MATH08007) AND Methods of Applied Mathematics (MATH08035)) OR ( Mathematics for Informatics 3a (MATH08042) AND Mathematics for Informatics 3b (MATH08043) AND Mathematics for Informatics 4a (MATH08044) AND Mathematics for Informatics 4b (MATH08045))

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. An understanding of the dynamical and kinematical concepts of flow modelling (flux, conservation, balance, thermal energy, gravitational field, electrostatic potential, velocity field, momentum density, etc.).
2. An ability to introduce and use potentials in appropriate vector field theories.
3. An understanding of the links between separated solutions and two-point eigenvalue problems; an ability to solve problems using separated solutions.
4. A familiarity with the use of dipole solutions.
5. Experience of some features of standing waves and of radiation.
6. An appreciation of fluid pressure in hydrostatics and in ideal flows. A familiarity with some basic viscous flows.
