Course description |
The core course addresses the theme of the Medical Biology Hons BSc Programme:
The scientific basis of human medicine: diseases important nationally and internationally; their identification; the role of biological science in advancing understanding and laying foundation for rational management; implementation of drug design and discovery; integration of new technologies, including genomics/proteomics.
Issues discussed will include: Disease and medicine in society; how biology impacts on medicine; how advances can be used to prevent and treat disease; databases; international health; resources; ethical and socio-economic factors. The core aims to provide familiarity with statistical techniques used in analysis of large data sets in the literature, the principles of designing and conducting clinical trials.
Examples of specific topics are: Ageing, Drug addiction; Development of specific drugs, including trials; Third world diseases.
Teaching methods: Lectures and seminars, and student-led presentations. |
