Course description This special topic will be centred around the new discoveries in the mechanisms by which HIV-1 and HIV-2 attach and enter cells, and how this new information contributes to our understanding of the cellular tropism of HIV for CD4 lymphocytes and other cell types known to be infected by HIV in infected individuals. The topic will also include presentations and discussions of antiviral treatment for HIV-1, how problems of antiviral resistance are tackled, and what are the remaining obstacles towards curative treatment. In particular, we will discuss the problems of virus reservoirs that act as source of reactivated virus once treatment is stopped. This work to be covered will therefore incorporate many of the key areas of research that contribute most to out current understanding of the AIDS disease process, and how its progression may be prevented.
