Course description Vaccines have been used successfully to control many bacterial and viral diseases. However, there are many diseases, particularly parasitic diseases, for which no vaccines exist. For this reason efforts have been made to improve vaccine technologies and utilise knowledge of how immune responses are induced and maintained. This Special Topic will consider the various technologies employed in vaccine construction and examine their use in developing vaccines against human and animal pathogens. The sessions will include lectures covering protein and genetic vaccines as well as edible vaccines. The safety aspects of vaccination will also be covered. Student presentations and discussion sessions will focus on key papers that illustrate novel strategies for controlling individual pathogens.
