Postgraduate Course: Signal Processing with MATLAB (PGEE11006)

Course Outline
School School of Engineering College College of Science and Engineering
Course type Standard Availability Available to all students
Credit level (Normal year taken) SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate) Credits 10
Home subject area Postgrad (School of Engineering) Other subject area None

Course description The course will teach students to solve simple problems in the areas of communications and digital signal processing in a MATLAB environment. The course will offer insight and reinforcement to the taught Signal Processing courses and preparation for the project phase by providing practical experience of implementing signal processing techniques. Sufficient background teaching will be given to enable students who have not specialised in communications or in digital signal processing to attempt the exercises in this course.

Contents:

Basic introduction to using MATLAB

Generating time domain signals, taking FFTs, creating plots

The DFT, its properties and implementation.

Classical and modern (i.e. Auto-Regressive) power spectral estimation

Generating and analysing random variables (mean, variance, histogram, etc)

Stochastic processes and noise

2 course assignments - example exercises could be: an adaptive noise cancellation problem, estimating frequencies and noise power in a time domain signal, etc.
Entry Requirements
Pre-requisites Co-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students also take Discrete-Time Signal Analysis (PGEE11026)
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Prior experience in computer programming (preferably MATLAB) is essential.
Prior attendance of basic courses in "Communications" and "Signals and Systems" is RECOMMENDED
