Course description |
This web-based course will be a new core course in Qualitative Data Analysis techniques.
The course is designed to complement the existing core research skills courses, to provide a foundation for students wishing to pursue intermediate and advanced qualitative skills training and to provide students with a comparable introductory course in the management and analysis of qualitative data or the use of qualitative data analysis software.
With its conceptual and practical focus the course will provide a foundation for students wishing to use computer software in their postgraduate work and will provide a resource for researchers and staff across the school interested in the use of software for qualitative data analysis.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
&· To provide an overview of types of qualitative data and data sources.
&· To provide an introduction to some of the theoretical, methodological and software issues relating to good qualitative research practice.
&· To provide an introduction to the processes of qualitative data analysis.
&· To provide a practical guide to CAQDAS packages and their use.

Assessment Information
Self-tests and practical exercises which students will work through during the course will build towards the final assessment in the form of a written research report. Students will be required to complete an analysis of a nominated set of data and critically reflect on their data management and analysis and on their use of CAQDAS software.

Course content
The course is divided into 3 blocks. Block 1 covers:
&· An introduction to types of qualitative data, good research practice and the conventions of qualitative data management.
&· Preliminaries of data analysis $ú language, text and transcription.
&· Data characteristics, comparisons and beginning a thematic analysis.
Block 2 covers:
&· Developing a thematic analysis
&· Using codes, categories and themes - retrieving, connecting and thinking about your data.
&· Lab-based training on NVivo and HyperResearch.
Block 3 covers:
&· Building your analysis.
&· Grounded theory.
&· Content analysis.
&· The impact of CAQDAS on the $ùcraft&© of qualitative research.
