An examination of problems and ambiguities associated with the category "Hindu" in relation to various kinds of diversity and dissent in Indian religious traditions and modern attempts to reform and homogenise around an entity called "Hinduism". |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1) An understanding of various kinds of diversity and dissent within 'Hindu' traditions, and the differing ways these are articulated.
2) Engagement with the secondary sources and scholarly debates on the relevant issues.
3) An ability to critically appraise the use of terms such as 'Hinduism' and 'Hindutva' in academic and popular understanding.
4) An ability to analyse 'Western' influences on modern understandings of 'Hinduism'.
