| Course description |
The course falls into two sections. The first focuses on Scotland's "national" instruments and their place in Scotland's musical life up to the turn of the twentieth century, and the second on major composers and collections of traditional music, highlighting selected pieces of repertoire. The place of traditional music in society is emphasised. Students will be assigned one piece of key reading each week, and a study visit will take place as part of the course. Students will be introduced to the discipline of ethnomusicology as a means of studying traditional music. European parallels will be drawn as appropriate. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have:
- gained increased knowledge of some of the major instruments used for traditional music in Scotland in a historical context and of their place in society
- explored some of the major collectors and composers of Scottish traditional music up to the turn of the twentieth century
- gained a broad overview of the discipline of ethnomusicology
- engaged with a range of key texts which deal with the subject of traditional music
- obtained a greater awareness of some of the issues connected to traditional music in a historical context, e.g. orality and literacy, transmission, patronage
- gained confidence in presenting the results of personal study and research in oral and written form. |
