| Course description |
This course is designed to introduce students to visual expressions of Christology through Western Art in the late medieval period and the Renaissance. It is structured around themes from the church year (Christmas to Ascension) and introduces students to the uses of paintings in various contexts (ecclesiastical, domestic), symbolism, painting techniques and broad historical background. Visits to galleries and museums will form an important part of the work of the class. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| By the end of the course participants should be able to do the following: describe paintings from the course critically, with an eye to detail and Christological meanings conveyed; describe the way certain painting techniques and resources express the theology of the period of a painting; describe how images of Christ were used as devotional aids in different contexts and periods. |
Assessment Information
| Assessment has three components. Students are assessed on their seminar participation and presentations (10% of final mark). Students do a short project which entails choosing a painting from the period 1100 to 1600, describing its historical context, the techniques used to produce it, the theological meaning it conveys, and the use to which it was put (30% of final mark). There is a two-hour examination in two sections. Section A reproduces two paintings: students must choose one and critically describe its Christological meanings. The paintings will be taken from books listed on the course bibilography. Section B is a choice of about six questions on themes from the course, of which students must answer one (60% of final mark). |
