| Course description |
The material covers a wide range of issues in current philosophy of mind and philosophy of language and their historical antecedents.
Material in philosophy of mind will be drawn from the following areas; metaphysics of mind (materialism and dualism, identity theories, functionalism, mental causation), mental phenomena (phenomenal consciousness, intentionality, action and intention, emotions), epistemology of mind (theory theory vs simulation, introspection, first-person authority).
Material in philosophy of language will be drawn from the following areas: theories of meaning, reference and proper names, pragmatics, rule following, truth. |
Course Delivery Information
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| The coursework involves close and critical analysis of various historical and current views on central issues in philosophy of mind and language (including philosophical logic). Students are asked to read, critically assess and discuss some of the most important texts in these fields. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in individual research through the writing of essays, and to develop their critical, analytic and communication skills through informal discussion and oral presentations in tutorial groups. |
Assessment Information
| Assessment will be by 3-hour examination in the June diet. |
