Course description The module takes the concept of site and situation as its focus. This theme is supplemented by those of public and private, place and identity. These themes collectively inform a set of architectural design exercises that have greater complexity than those tackled at Stage 1. The thematic scope of the module serves as a context to introduce critical and selfreflexive dimensions of architectural design, and the development of skills in design inquiry. The module addresses digital media and explores their consequences for the representation and fabrication in architecture.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Architectural Design: Elements (ARCH08001) AND Architectural Design: Assembly (ARCH08004) AND Technology and Environment: Principles (ARCH08002)
Co-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students also take Architectural Design: Any Place (ARCH08006) AND Technology and Environment: Applications (ARCH08008)
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements None
Additional Costs Specialist Equipment Fee.
Processes and materials involved in the presentation of work: printing and reprographic charges, photographic costs, drawing and modelling materials; digital storage etc.

There is one main studio day which will be structured according to the design projects being undertaken. A mixture of methods will be used, supervised learning, directed learning, and independent learning.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to demonstrate:
1. Ability to develop architectural designs that
appropriately respond to a specified site and that contain an explicit investigation through research;
2. Capacity to synthesize a range of programmatic
components, formal and spatial strategies, and contextual themes of modest complexity within an architectural design;
3. Ability to effectively explore and communicate design ideas and propositions, individually and in teams, in a range of digital and analogue formats.
Assessment Information
Continuous assessment through design coursework. Drawn, modeled and documented design studio work & project panels.
Special Arrangements
This course is taught jointly with Edinburgh College of Art. Students will have access to both campuses and may be located in studios at either institution.
