First Class Week 1, Tuesday, 12:10 - 13:00, Zone: Central. The first lecture of Semester 2 will be held in Room G.08, William Robertson Building, George Square. Visiting students arriving in January should come to the English Literature office, Room 6.05, David Hume Tower, to sign up for a tutorial.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The principal objectives of English Literature 1 are twofold: to enable students to become fluent and confident readers of a variety of literary forms and to develop greater self-awareness in their understanding of the reading process and of critical practice. The work of the second semester, 'Literature and the "literary", c. 1300-1700', introduces students to a variety of pre-modern literary and dramatic modes and examines different understandings of the literary and the function of literature during this period.
Assessment Information
2 essays (up to 2000 words); tutorial assessment; 1 three-hour degree exam. Essays 20% each, Tutorial Assessment 10%, Exam 50%.
