Course description |
An introduction to the philosophy of music focusing on issues of musical meaning and value and on the problems of musical description and criticism. Topics covered include: musical representation, expression and interpretation; creativity and genius; music and national culture; technology and performance; listening; taste; high and low music. |

One piece of live music criticism, of no more than 1,000 words (20%).
One 3,000 word essay (40%), and one 3,000 word essay (40%). |
