Course descriptionThis course critically examines current approaches in health promotion and in particular will consider needs assessment, appraising the evidence for effective interventions, systematic approach to health promotion planning, and evaluating health promotion programmes.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Nursing 1 (NUST08001) AND Health and Society 1A (NUST08002) AND Health and Society 1B (NUST08003) AND Nursing 2 (NUST08006) AND Health and Society 2A (NUST08004) AND Health and Society 2B (NUST08005) OR ( Health and Society 1A (NUST08002) AND Health and Society 2A (NUST08004))

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To develop:
- a critical awareness of the relationship between the theory and practice of health promotion
- the ability to develop core health promotion practice competencies in relation to needs assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a health event
- the ability to apply theory to practice in the context of an actual health promoting event.
Assessment Information
Assessment is in two parts:
&· Group assessment of the planning, implementation and evaluation of a health event within the University setting (30%)

&· An individual student report of the processes involved in planning, implementation and evaluation of the health event based on critical reflection. 3,000 words (70%).

Part 1
Students will be required to work together to organise and stage a health event. Students will be assessed as a group. Marks will be awarded in relation to both the planning process and the outcome of the event.

Part 2
This assessment is in the form of a critical reflective course paper of the processes involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the health event. The reflective log can be be included as an appendix to the critical reflective course paper.

Academic description The course is designed to complement the theoretical foundations of health promotion that the students achieved in Health and Society 1A and Health and Society 2A. The course develops the core competencies of health promotion practice: needs assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programmes.
