Course descriptionThis course focuses on an exploration of the use of still photography in anthropology with a particular emphasis on ethnographic image and its meaning in the discipline and within the wider public discourse on culture and power.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate:
- an understanding of anthropological theories in relation to visual culture
- an ability to analyse photographic images in reference both to content and context
- an understanding of the uses the discipline has made of still photography throughout its development
- an understanding of how ethnographic images might be evaluated as illustration, evidence and commentary
Assessment Information
(i) 1 long essay (4000 words) worth 80% of the available marks
(ii) 1 short written assignment (max. 1500 words) worth 20% of the available marks
