Course descriptionThe course critically examines issues of high strategic relevance to large multinational corporations. Based on current research and partly taught through the case study method, the course provides research concepts and arguments for analysing and managing strategic international issues. Whilst providing insights into firms originating from developing economies, it primarily focuses on Western multinationals operating in developed and emerging countries, across a range of services and manufacturing sectors, among which retailing, fast-moving consumer goods, technology sectors.

Key topics include: The evolving nature of the multinational and of international business theories; National and sectoral contexts of multinationals; Transnational and regional strategies; The challenge to Western multinationals from firms from emerging markets; Emerging international organisational forms and change management; The process of global innovation; Issues in implementing sustainability initiatives in multinationals; Critical issues in cross-border alliances and mergers and acquisitions management.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students will gain an in-depth understanding of:
- The evolving nature of multinationals and of related international business theories
- The diversity of contexts which multinationals span and their conflicting implications for firms? behaviour
- How today?s multinationals create competitive advantage through the pursuit of ?transnational? strategies and ?regional? strategies; how they implement those strategies by adopting innovative organizational forms and the issues they face in managing the change process
- The challenges posed by players from emerging markets for Western multinationals, through an identification of distinctive features of their strategies
- How multinationals manage innovation globally as well as the problems they face
- The issues multinationals face in developing and implementing sustainable development policies
- The critical issues and success factors in the management of cross-border strategic alliances and mergers and acquisitions

Throughout the course, students will acquire:
- Knowledge on complex strategic and organisational problems large multinational firms face in today?s global markets
- An ability to critically appraise the multiple facets of issues dealt with in the course
- An ability to research and apply research concepts and arguments in the field of global strategy and management to analyse empirical problems
- Writing of an analytical report on an international corporation or a strategic international management problem
- Development of team-working skills
Assessment Information
Group coursework (approx. 4000 words): 30%
The group coursework consists of a written analytical report on an international corporation or a strategic international management problem.
Individual examination: 70%

Visiting Student Variant Assessment:
Group coursework (approx. 4000 words): 30%
One 2,000 word exam replacement essay: 70%
