| Course description | The purpose of this course is to introduce the Ethics of the Western church through some major ethical writings of the most influential of the Western fathers, Augustine of Hippo. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, a student will have:
(1) understood aspects of the major ethical writings of Augustine - their intellectual context, underlying concerns, and material content;
(2) engaged critically with Augustine's ethical writings both by way of close reading of primary texts and by judicious use of secondary literature;
(3) completed comprehension tests and written an essay on an aspect of Augustine's ethical work studied in the course, engaging with primary and where appropriate relevant secondary literature;
(4) presented in the seminar and participated in constructive discussion and debate with other seminar members in a respectful manner;
(5) considered the positive and negative implications of the ethics of Augustine for contemporary constructive work in Christian Ethics. |
Assessment Information
| There will be primary reading assigned each week, accompanied by a short written comprehension test (500 words max. per week); in sum these will account for 50% of the marks for the course. An end-of-course essay (3000 words) will account for 50%. |
