SummaryThis course, together with Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad Level 10 (alongside which it must always be taken), constitutes 12 months full-time study at an approved university outside Europe. The two courses are optional Year 4 curricula for students on the MChem degree programmes Chemistry with a year Abroad, Chemistry with Environmental and Sustainable Chemistry and a year Abroad, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry with a year Abroad, Chemistry with Materials Chemistry with a year Abroad and Chemical Physics with a year Abroad. During the period students undertake an extended research project on a topic agreed with their host supervisor. Taught courses may also be attended and may be chosen from those available at the university at an appropriate level and relevance to students' interests and degree programme. Coursework for completion during the year is provided by the University of Edinburgh. Assessment consists of marks for coursework, a literature survey related to the project, a written project report, an oral presentation and aspects of performance in the project.

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year in Industry Level 10 (CHEM10026) OR Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year in Industry Level 11 (CHEM11030) OR Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad with Industrial Experience Level 10 (CHEM10046) OR Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad with Industrial Experience Level 11 (CHEM11038)
Other requirements (Must include a weighted average of Grade C or higher in all Chemistry 3 courses AND a weighted average of Grade D or higher in Chemistry 3A and Chemistry 3B, at the first attempt) OR (Must include a weighted average of Grade C or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses AND a weighted average of Grade D or higher in all Chemical Physics 3 courses with degree examinations, at the first attempt).

Note that students must additionally have achieved a suitable standard in a relevant language through study in years 1 and 2, if appropriate.

Learning Outcomes
Successful completion of the year in Abroad course requires students to:
- execute a significant research project within the discipline of chemistry/chemical physics;
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the background, theories and concepts relating to the work undertaken during the year;
- demonstrate competence in a range of routine and advanced skills (technical, IT, etc.) appropriate to the project;
- successfully communicate formally (presentations, reports, etc) and informally with peers and specialists within the work environment;
- consolidate on academic chemistry covered in earlier parts of the degree programme;
- develop and enhance understanding of the culture of the host country over an extended period.
