Summary | User modelling studies tools and techniques for constructing interactive computer systems that can be adapted, or can adapt themselves, to the skills, knowledge and needs of their users. It draws on Human-Computer Interaction (particularly intelligent interfaces and cognitive engineering), Artificial Intelligence (particularly knowledge-based systems), the Instructional Sciences (particularly computer-based tutoring systems), Linguistics (particularly dialogue models), and Information Retrieval. |

Learning Outcomes
1 - Demonstrate, in writing, knowledge of the issues and problems in user modelling;
2 - demonstrate understanding of modelling techniques by diagnosing problems in relations between users---particularly students---and adaptive systems;
3 - use design principles and methodologies in solving simple user modelling problems;
4 - demonstrate awareness of current areas of research by locating and summarising examples of recent progress;
5 - exercise ability to solve problems of an open-ended nature, or to relate them to other such problems as covered in the course.
