SummaryThis course will explore the influence of contemporary religious and ethical debates on literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It will consider the differences between Scottish, English and American fiction in religious and theological terms. Writers from Christian, Jewish, and atheist perspectives will be contrasted.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Moses and the Torah (BIST08020) AND Reading the New Testament (BIST08016)) OR ( Christian Theology: Approaches and Themes (THET08014) OR God in Philosophy: Plato to Hume (THET08010) OR Christian Theology: Doctrines and Debates (THET08017)) OR ( Lived Religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam (REST08009) AND Religion in Culture: Theory, History and Interpretation (REST08011)) OR ( English Literature 2 (ENLI08003) OR Scottish Literature 2 (ENLI08004))

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least three introductory level Divinity/Religious Studies/English Literature courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students should:
- have a detailed knowledge of selected contemporary literary texts and of their interaction with modern religious and ethical issues;
- be aware of current debates in the field of literature, religion and theology;
- be able to discuss the differences in theological and literary emphasis between Scottish, English and American literature, and between Christian and Jewish writers;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings;
- be able to demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
