| Summary | Subjects covered:
History of modern architecture, technology of the Modern Movement; problems in conserving the recent past; principles of modernist design.
The histories of the British and Scottish planning systems and the theory that leads to current legislation. The Scottish Planning System is contextualised internationally by looking at examples from other European countries and the USA.

Key Aims:
1. To review arguments concerning the conservation of the architecture of the recent past.
2. To consider the challenges posed by the architecture and technology of Modern Movement buildings.
This is a lecture-based module with supporting seminars and visits.

Assessment will be by an individual listing proposal - an illustrated essay which will enable students to satisfy all three learning outcomes. Course grades will be 100% based on this piece of work. Each learning outcome will be separately graded (and equally weighted). |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Display an awareness of the history, language and technology of modernist and late 20th-century architecture, and an ability to apply that knowledge in reports and evaluations.
- Display an awareness of conservation issues relating to modern architecture.
- Display organisational, verbal and presentational skills appropriate to project preparation on the conservation of modern architecture.
