SummaryThis course uses the city of Edinburgh to examine a range of themes relevant to urban design practice through the study of medium and large scale urban developments. The themes that will be explored through these case studies include:
- strategic planning & urban design;
- green space & open space;
- transport;
- planning law;
- urban design policy & guidance;
- public involvement;
- strategies for specific urban fabrics such as waterfronts, urban edge, etc.

The cases from Edinburgh will be visited and site visits will be supported by presentations given by representative from stakeholders such as designers, developers, local authority or local community. These cases will be the subject of field studies and report by the students. These are complemented by presentations and student reading on international cases studies from elsewhere that SBE has expertise in through its involvement in Interreg projects etc.

Course description Aims
- To familiarize students with recent medium and large scale urban design projects in different geographic contexts.
- To evaluate the process and product from the perspective of the designer, developer, statutory authority and local community.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understanding, Knowledge and Cognitive Skills - You will develop knowledge of the range of issues involved in medium and large scale urban developments
  2. Understanding of how these issues affect the process of design and development in different cultural, social and economic contexts
  3. Scholarship, Enquiry and Research (Research-Informed Learning) - You will develop the ability to search for and analyse information relevant to the issues involved in medium and large scale urban developments
  4. The ability to synthesise from the wide range of information sources typically used in case study-based research
  5. Sensitivity to the importance of developing an understanding of context when conducting case study-based research
