SummaryThe course presents a broad outline of the historical foundations of China's imperial history, exemplified in the figure of the First Emperor. Students will be introduced to an important chapter in Chinese history, the founding of the first Qin Dynasty and its political, social, cultural and ideological implications. The First Emperor is a perfect example to elaborate on issues relevant also in contemporary Chinese society, where he is utilized in contemporary debates about Neo-Confucianism, nationalism and patriotism accordingly and is presented as heroic figure in films and exhibitions. Students will also be introduced to a variety of multimedia sources and issues of historiographical writing.

This course is intended for students on a Chinese language degree programme (single and joint honours).
