SummaryThis course examines Japanese performing arts from the Meiji period (1868-1912) to the present day in the context of their interface with performing arts outside Japan. The main areas for consideration will be the influence of non-Japanese performing art forms on the development of Japanese performing arts and the influence of Japanese performing arts, particularly the traditional genres, on performative trends worldwide. Particular attention will be paid to the reception of Japanese performing arts abroad and to examples of non-Japanese performances that draw on techniques of performance originating from Japanese theatre.

Students who have completed the course successfully will be able to:
Apply a general knowledge of the performing arts in Japan in the modern period and their historical, cultural and social context

Understand critically, appreciate and analyse contemporary performances of modern Japanese theatre and other theatre influenced by Japanese performing arts

Describe, explain and discuss analytically key aspects of the interaction between Japanese performing arts and world theatre
