Academic Description:
This course aims to refine students' understanding of the Hebrew Bible by close reading in the original language of a set text. While the course thus will enhance the linguistic skills of participants, its primary goal is rather to develop exegetical skills in the interpretation of the text under investigation. All matters pertinent to exegesis are incorporated into the study of the set text: philological concerns, textual criticism, as well as historical, literary, and theological dimensions. The set text changes from year to year depending on the research interests of the instructor.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course begins with a detailed orientation to the set text, its leading interpretative issues, and the seminal contributions in the history of its interpretation. Thereafter, the text itself structures the course as selected passages are studied in their original language, along with the translations from antiquity, where relevant (e.g. Septuagint, Targumim).
Student Learning Experience Information:
The course has weekly meetings with sessions in two-hour blocks. All sessions are seminar based and interactive, with the text itself as the focus of discussion. Weekly writing assignments provide opportunity for formative assessment and developing the skill of communicating exegetical discussions in written form. A major independent exegetical essay is written as the culmination to the course. Through this, and in conjunction with the formative assessment and weekly discussion, students will demonstrate their achievement of the course's learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Produce detailed exegetical study of texts from the Hebrew Bible in text-critical, literary, historical, and theological dimensions.
- Demonstrate linguistic understanding of the classical Hebrew language.
- Offer independent critical judgments of previous scholarly exegetical discussion.
- Demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
