SummaryBusiness in the Arts is designed to assist non-specialist students to acquire understanding of the nature, structure and workings of contemporary business organisations and the management processes. Through the use of guest speakers, case studies and visits, specific attention will be paid to the application of this understanding to organisations operating in the arts/culture sector. The course is designed to be both self-contained for participants who do not wish to study the subject further, and to prepare students who wish to take additional related modules on return to their respective institutions.

It seeks to provide an integrated introduction to the business environment with a focus on the arts/culture sector, the nature of business organisations, the role of the manager and techniques relevant to management.

Business in the Arts I consists of - Business Policy and Strategy, Marketing, and Operations Management.

Business in the Arts II consists of - Accounting, Finance, Management of Human Resources and Enterprise in the Arts and Culture Industry.
Course description The Business in the Arts Internship Project will consist of a major piece of written work that is planned, researched and prepared during the 4 week internship. To help students prepare for the project, a two hour Research Methodology seminar will be held prior to you undertaking the internship which will provide guidance on project definition, overview of the main research methodologies and an introduction to literature searches and secondary and primary research techniques.

Student Learning Experience

The internship will build on the experiences provided in Business in the Arts I and II, and will enable students to be part of and contribute to the World's largest Arts Festival. The internships will enable students to put into practice and reflect upon what they have learnt and read about during the taught components of the programme.

Pre-requisitesAs the course is an integral component of the Business in the Arts programme it will not be available to students from out-with the programme.

Students must have completed Business in the Arts I (BUST08016) and Business in the Arts II (BUST08017).

Additional Information (Assessment) There will be two components of assessment
80% Individual written report circa 1,750-2,000 words.
20% Internship attendance and report submitted by internship hosts.

The report (worth 80%) will be based upon the work and the organisation undertaken by the student and will be linked back to a topic covered as part of the taught course.

Each Student's topic will be discussed and agreed with the Programme Director during the first four weeks of the programme.

During their internship the students will be encouraged to collect data to help illustrate the points raised and arguments presented in their written report. The internship agreement will include a section requiring the host to provide appropriate support and access to facilitate this data collection.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the different methods of research available and the range of choices available
  2. Understand how to conduct a literature review, identify research questions and design a research project
  3. Develop "hands-on" experience of gathering and analysing secondary and qualitative and/or quantitative data
  4. Demonstrate skills in reporting research results and drawing implications and conclusions from the findings.
