SummaryThis course is designed to introduce students to the history and variety of European theatre, to develop reading strategies for dramatic texts and an awareness of the history of performance practice. It involves working in groups.
Course description The course is team-taught, the programme consisting of a range of texts selected from the list below (plus others that become available as staff return from leave), and taught in two-, three- or four-week blocks, as appropriate.

The course will open with 2 sessions on the relationship of text to performance, and on the European dimensions of the course.

Fabrizio Gifuni: Gadda goes to War (Dr Alberto Godioli)

Karel Capek: R.U.R. (Dr Smith)

Václav Hável: The Garden Party (Dr Smith)

Jean Genet: The Maids / The Blacks (Dr Claire Boyle)

The programme will vary from session to session, depending on staff availability, but the aim is to ensure that each of the DELC language areas is represented by at least one teaching block. The course will be delivered using texts in English translation, and the texts used will be readily available in translation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of European theatre since the Classical period, including major periods and representative authors.
  2. Appraise texts within their historical and cultural contexts using appropriate literary vocabulary and terminology, and a range of critical approaches, and methods of interpretation.
  3. Engage with and interpret layers of meaning within individual texts and between groups of texts.
  4. Develop effective communication, presentation and interaction skills across a range of media.
  5. Demonstrate self-reliance, initiative, and the ability to work flexibly with others as part of a team.
