SummaryThe rise of Latin Christianity in Roman North Africa (modern Tunisia and Algeria), with special attention to Tertullian and Cyprian, martyrdom, church controversies, relations with pagan society and culture, and emergence of the Donatist counter-church.

Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
display deep understanding of the theological, historical and socio-political content and context of some of the major texts by early North African Christian writers before Justinian.
They should enhance their ability to:
- analyse and criticise key primary source materials;
- engage in close reading of texts;
- show improved skills in oral and literary communication;
- demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings;
- demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
