SummaryThis course introduces the key models and methods for studying crime to students with a knowledge of economic and econometric analysis at the undergraduate level.
Course description The first part of the course will look at models which outline the economic approach to understanding crime and the predictions they make about criminal behaviour. It will also consider the empirical literature on the criminal justice system and deterrence. The second part of the course will look at topics in the crime literature, including: crime and the macroeconomy; race and racial profiling; illegal drugs; and gangs and social interactions.
The course is taught through a programme of lectures and seminars. Reading and critical assessment of the literature is an important ingredient of the course.

Pre-requisitesStudents should usually have at least 3 Economics courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. This MUST INCLUDE courses in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Have a knowledge and understanding of key concepts, issues and models in the economics of crime, along with relevant empirical evidence on and policy implications of those models and a deeper understanding of recent research activity in some more specialised areas.
  2. Research and investigative skills such as problem framing and solving and the ability to assemble and evaluate complex evidence and arguments.
  3. Communication skills in order to critique, create and communicate understanding and to collaborate with and relate to others.
  4. Personal effectiveness through task-management, time-management, teamwork and group interaction, dealing with uncertainty and adapting to new situations, personal and intellectual autonomy through independent learning.
  5. Practical/technical skills such as, modelling skills (abstraction, logic, succinctness), qualitative and quantitative analysis and general IT literacy.
