SummaryThe module trains students to apply a variety of techniques of discourse analysis to samples of English and critically compare the merits of different techniques. Topics include: pragmatics and discourse analysis, speech act theory, conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, co-operative principle, genre analysis, contrastive rhetoric, language and power, language and gender, corpus linguistics and discourse and the internet. Students will analyse data in their own TESOL situation and evaluate current research issues in discourse analysis/TESOL methodology.

Additional Information (Assessment) Students will produce:
a) a folio of course work (worth 30% of the total)
- applying a variety of techniques of discourse analysis
- critically comparing the merits of different techniques
- evaluating current research issues in discourse analysis

b) an assignment (worth 70% of the total) that includes:
- a description and analysis of an attempt to use one approach to discourse analysis on data collected by the course member;
- an assessment of the discourse analysis approach as a research tool;
- an assessment of the application of the discourse analysis approach to the participant's own TESOL situation.

Learning Outcomes
Summary of intended learning outcomes. By the end of the module, students will have demonstrated the ability to:
1. Apply a variety of techniques of discourse analysis to the analysis of samples of written and spoken English;
2. Critically compare the merits of different techniques;
3. Identify the usefulness and practicability of applying such techniques to gather and analyse data in their own TESOL situation;
4. Evaluate the role of discourse analysis in producing or evaluating materials for TESOL;
5. Evaluate current research issues in discourse analysis/TESOL methodology.
