| Summary | This course is ONLY for those students taking Portuguese as a named part of a Combined honours degree. The course is concerned with familiarising you with a wide variety of registers and the complex grammatical structures of European Portuguese. Teaching will be based on a booklet of course materials containing texts ranging from literary to journalistic with thematic emphasis on current events relating to Portugal and the Portuguese-Speaking world. In conjunction with the written materials which you will be expected to read and prepare in advance of each class, there will also be regular trips to the Language and Humanities Centre for listening comprehension practice. You will be introduced to summary writing, advanced comprehension, translation and composition. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- To improve your confidence and accuracy of expression in spoken and written Portuguese
- To expand your vocabulary to include a wide range of idiomatic expressions.
- To enable you to perform the basic functions of a liason interpreter from and into Portuguese and improve your ability to make clear and easy-to-follow presentations using appropriate audio-visual materials
- To improve your understanding of written Portuguese through access to and close analysis of a range of written materials in a range of registers and linguistic variations (from Portugal and Brazil)
- To provide you with a wider awareness of issues currently affecting Portugal, Brazil and the rest of the Lusophone World
