SummaryThis option will examine Spanish American poetry and prose written between independence from Spain and 1900. Texts will be studied in their historical context and the selection comprises epic poetry, the national romance, the short story and the essay. Topics will include the wars of independence, the recovery of the pre-Columbian past, Romanticism, nation building, gender, ethnicity, and race.

Successful completion of the course will enable students to demonstrate:
- knowledge of nineteenth-century Spanish American literature.
- analytical engagement with key concepts, themes, and stylistic features in nineteenth-century Spanish American literature.
- awareness of the social, cultural and historical conditions in nineteenth-century Spanish American countries.
- the ability to undertake detailed textual analysis, articulate coherent arguments and show a high level of expression in written and oral work.
