SummaryThis course will focus on Italo Calvino's intellectual contribution from 1946 to 1985, with special reference to some of the many literary avenues that he pursued. Our choice includes an early post-war (short) novel, one fantasy novel, one ?traditional? novella, a collection of short stories mixing literature and science, a collection of poemes en prose, a hypernovel and finally a collection of short stories centred on looking at and describing the world. Calvino?s exciting contribution is a useful stepping stone to other areas of knowledge, from Italian society to French or American contemporary literature. In a mixture of lectures and seminars, our approach to his work will focus mainly on textual analysis and his use of narrative techniques, but also on literary genres, literary movements and their historic context.
