SummaryThis course aims to provide a brief but inclusive account of Sicilian literary history and culture: from the Sicilian School of love poetry, which is credited with the invention of the sonnet, through the mythical and musical elaborations of its main themes, to the major prose writers that marked the unification of Italy and accompanied the advent of cinema. The course highlights the role played by Sicilian literature in the bottom-up formation of the Italian canon, with particular emphasis on the significance of Classical and Arabic influences and the relation between genres and gender. Literary material spans from the poets at the court of Frederick II to the Nobel Prizes Luigi Pirandello and Salvatore Quasimodo, and contemporary authors such as Vincenzo Consolo and Goliarda Sapienza. In addition to the course, students will be involved in in-depth seminars and will give individual presentations on one or more of the main topics.
