| Summary | This course is for students on the HSS International Foundation Programme only. It is not available to undergraduate or postgraduate students.
Foundation English for Academic Purposes 2 is designed to improve the students' English knowledge and skills to the point where they can participate effectively in undergraduate courses in Humanities or Social Science. With that aim in mind, FEAP 2 will focus on the development of students' critical thinking and presentation skills. Critical Thinking sessions (18 hours) cover issues such as the identifying of sound or poor argumentation in academic texts and recognising persuasion and bias. The last three sessions focus on analysing critical reviews and teach students how to write a comparative critical review. Presentation Skills sessions (22 hours) address such aspects of effective presentation as the use of visuals, phrasing and emphasis in vocal delivery, and making a strong conclusion. Together, these two strands complement the work done in Foundation English for Academic Purposes 1 on academic reading, writing and vocabulary, to provide the students with the tools required for effective undergraduate study.

| Additional Information (Assessment) |
This course will be assessed by two components.
1. Oral presentation (10 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions/answers and discussion), weighted at 50%.
2. Critical review (1,250-1,500 words) of two academic readings from those used in the non-EAP components for session two, counting as 50%.
To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40% in the combined mark (and a minimum of 30% in each assessment component).

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand and analyse arguments in academic texts, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses
- Analyse examples of critical reviews and learn how to write a comparative critical review

- Learn how to structure and deliver an effective academic presentation in English
