| Summary | This course looks at gendered concepts of authorship as they appeared in and helped to shape the poetic practice of this period. The first half of the course examines the poetry of women writers in the 1790s and their influence on Wordsworth and Coleridge. The second half of the course examines the way in which the gendered field of poetry thus produced created its own problems for later writers such as John Keats, Mary Tighe, Byron and Hemans. By concentrating on these issues the course tends to suspend the question of what "romanticism" is or is not, but the course will end with a discussion of the romantic canon as it has been traditionally constructed and the reasons for its exclusion of female poets |

Learning Outcomes
| Students will learn to recognise, and understand the possibilities of, various poetic forms (blank verse autobiography, conversation poem, sonnet, and description of sublime nature, Spenserian allegory, ode); understand the mutually-defining interrelationship of literary form and gendered poetic identity; and be familiar with ways of understanding the process of tradition- and canon-formation and its role in authorising literary criticism as a discipline.
