SummaryThe course aims by seminar and workshop to introduce students to theoretical, historical and practical issues involved in the composition of poetry. Issues to be addressed include: the interplay of the tripartite division of poetry into sound (melopoeia), image (phanopoeia) and idea (logopoeia); the arguments for and against free verse, as opposed to the traditional patterning of metre and rhyme; methods of gathering and redrafting material.

Learning Outcomes
Students who complete the course successfully will attain a broadened awareness of stylistic possibilities in poetry. By practice they will develop compositional skills in a way that complements more general English studies, and be introduced to the possibilities of publishing their work.
