SummaryThe British History (VS2) course is designed to provide an understanding of the major events and themes in the political development of modern Britain from c.1832 to 2000. Available to Visiting Students only.
Course description Particular emphasis is placed on the changing political system, the development of the British state, the relations between England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and the maintenance of an overseas Empire. The course provides a basic grounding in modern British history for those intending to take Honours History courses.
The VS2 course is thematically delivered in the following key sections:
Britain in the Mid-Nineteenth Century (1832-86)
Mass Politics and National Identities (1886-1918)
From Western Front to Cold War (1918-51)
The Recent Political History of the UK (1951-2000)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate, by way of coursework and examination as required, a sound knowledge of the subject considered in the course;

  3. demonstrate, by way of coursework and examination as required, an ability to research, structure and complete written work of a specified length, or within a specified time;
  4. demonstrate an ability to make informed contributions to class discussion and give an oral presentation as required;
  5. demonstrate an ability to organise their own learning, manage their workload, and work to a timetable.
