SummaryThis course is an introduction to the history of the Islamic world from c. 1050 to c. 1650, including the Seljuk empire, the Crusades, the Mongol invasions, the formation of the Ottoman and Safavid empires and the expansion of Islam into Africa and Asia. The impact of nomadic migrations, processes of state formation, conversion and Islamisation, and encounters between Christendom and Islam are all explored.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. outline the key events of the history of Islam c.1050-c.1650 CE
  2. explain the various dimensions (e.g. social, religious, cultural, political, economic) of large-scale historical changes in the Islamic World in the medieval and early modern period, notably: the emergence of the medieval nomad empires and the so-called 'gunpowder empires' of the early modern period, the expansion of Islam beyond the Middle East and North Africa and the changing dynamics in the interaction between the Islamic world and the rest of Europe, Asia and Africa
  3. critique the relative usefulness of the sources available for the study of social history and gender in the pre-modern Islamic world
  4. critique primary and secondary sources and integrate these sources into their argumentation
  5. present arguments in a variety of written and oral formats as well as the ability to participate in informed debate on the above topics
