| Summary | The Elements of Islam course will give students an understanding of key and representative problems and debates in Islamic thought through the study of a selection of primary and secondary texts. By studying these texts, students will also gain familiarity with the Qur'an and its role in Islamic theology and thought. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critical understanding of key concepts and terms in various fields of Islamic learning (e.g. hadith, Qur'anic exegesis, Islamic law, theology, Sufism)
- Familiarity with central texts in different fields of Islamic learning in their original language
- Ability to explain the significance of selected text for the development of the respective fields of Islamic thought
- Ability to evaluate and critique secondary literature on the above topics
