SummaryThis course discusses the salient features of the mystical dimension within Islam and covers the historical background of the tradition and the foremost personalities who played a major role in its development. Moreover, it will examine the primary concepts promoted in Sufism and their manifestation, in both a religious and social context, through translations of the classical works that present both Sufi theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Students will acquire a good knowledge of the history of Islamic mysticism.
  2. Students will develop a good understanding of key mystical concepts, controversies and debates, and of their broader religious an intellectual contexts.
  3. Students will become familiar with Islamic mysticism's social and literary manifestations.
  4. Students will learn critically to examine and interpret historical materials.
  5. Students will learn to read and understand various types of Sufi texts in translation.
